Masks – How to Sew – Sewing Machine Method

In this blog post you will find a collection of videos, all showing how to make Face Masks. Each video has its own take on how to make a mask and what the pattern should be, as well a video on how to make a headband.

At this time I think there are 41 different styles, from all over the world but they each have one thing in common; they are created to protect the users face from the dangers of the outside world; be it dust, pollution or coronavirus. Most of these masks are meant as supplemental to the official medical masks, with some having instruction on how to bring them up to medical code.

Feel free to comment on the pros and cons of the designs so that other readers can benefit from your enlightened critique.

Why this blog page was created; a brief history.

In mid March, I heard on The Rachel Maddow TV show that an Evansville, Indiana hospital (Deaconess) had asked people to help them, by making face masks and the report said there was a video on how to make the masks they needed.

I found the hospital web site and copied the video link:

https://www.deaconess.com/SpecialPages/How-to-make-a-Face-Mask?fbclid=IwAR0hXfxdIzn_zruR-mmgScjPb8_TaUJJExJqSHHYaJH8yL1r3qa8mgwKHg0

I then posted it on FaceBook.

Patterns and Instructions:

SEE BOTTOM of this blog for the text form of the PDF instructions provided in the Deaconess web site.

NOTE: Flannel is suggested for backing but it is not the proper material to use for this face mask, so just use 100% cotton for both front and back.

=====
After I posted the original web page that contained the video I looked around for other possible “How To” videos on how to sew masks.

I found many videos from all over the world that had dates from 2018 to Mar 2020.

Below are the videos

The videos and links to the videos are provided, which you can copy, if you want to save a particular design for your files.

Each video has different designs for the face mask and some have drawings of how to cut the fabric and where to sew the material.

Super Simple Face Mask Pattern For Adults And Kids

Where do I send my masks?

One of the questions that keeps coming up in different on line forums is “Where do I send my masks? Is there a coordinator for distribution of masks?” — In trying to answer that question I came across this news item in a search result.  — https://www.wwlp.com/news/health/coronavirus-local-impact/local-contractor-coordinating-face-masks-donations-for-baystate-health/

Maybe you can do the same local search to help find who in your area is coordinating face mask distribution.

Below are samples of different things people are doing with the

masks.

There are also people sewing fancy masks just for fun

Fancy Face Masks

Face Mask without Sewing

If all else fails and you need a mask for someone in a hurry follow these “No Sew” steps. — http://blog.japanesecreations.com/no-sew-face-mask-with-handkerchief-and-hair-tie?fbclid=IwAR0tVMkwf23V9WiJZcaN4OppgF4Ik3Yiujz72lHK5SUjtJRERGGesWynx8Y

Alternate way of making an elastic band mask into a tie behind the head mask.

Other way to tackle the question; “Which one to use?  Elastic over the ears or tie behind the head.”

I made a band using a 16″ X 2″ piece of flannel, sewed it to 1″ and put it through the two elastic ear bands.

The mask now fits tight like a tie mask and the wear can put it over the ears or on top of the ears, so no more irritation on the back of the ears from just elastic.

mask - 16 X 2 flannel band thru elastic

My first mask: 9″ X 6″ with 7″ elastic with 16″ X 2″ flannel strap.

No pleats, but sides sewed together with a couple of darts to close up the open area created when the mask is on the face.

Here is the text instructions for the original mask video from the Indiana Hospital.

How to make a Face Mask

You will need a cotton fabric, a pretty print is best

Cotton flannel for the backing. NOTE: Flannel is not the proper material to use for this face mask, so just use 100% cotton for both front and back.

Rope elastic: beading cord elastic will work (You may also use 1/8″ flat elastic)

Cut the elastic 7″ long and tie a knot at each end (Do Not knot the ends of the flat)

You can make 2 sizes: Adult and Child

1. Put right sides of cotton fabric together
Cut 9×6 (Adult) or 7.5×5 (Child)

2. Starting at the center of bottom edge sew to the first corner, stop. Sew the elastic with the knot out into the corner. A few stitches forward and back will hold this.

3. Sew to the next corner, stop, and bring the other end of that same elastic to the corner and sew a few stitches forward and back.

4. Now sew across that top of the mask to the next corner. Again put an elastic with the knot out.

5. Sew to next corner and sew in the other end of the same elastic.

6. Sew across the bottom leaving about 1.5″ to 2″ open. Stop, cut the thread. Turn inside out.

7. Pin 3 tucks on each side of the mask. Make sure the tucks are the same direction.

8. Sew around the edge of the mask twice.

It is so easy to make this.

Be sure any fabric design is placed horizontally.
